May 2024, Amber-Lynn Watson [photo] became a client
of the Massachusetts Small Business Development Center after graduating from the Massachusetts SBDC’s Basics
program. Amber-Lynn had a passion for bringing people's special
moments to life and a dream of starting a home-based event planning
business specializing in weddings in Western Massachusetts.
Starting with little more than enthusiasm and a vision, Amber-Lynn worked closely with a Massachusetts SBDC advisor to build her business from the ground up. Together, they navigated the formation of her LLC, Small Town Moments, established her brand identity, built her website on Squarespace, set up professional banking and payment systems, and developed contracts and pricing strategies. The advisor also guided her through marketing plans, SEO optimization, social media advertising, and the power of building strong vendor partnerships.
As a 100% woman-owned business, Amber-Lynn faced the classic startup challenge of having no portfolio or referenceable clients in the competitive wedding industry. With guidance from the Massachusetts SBDC, she developed a strategic networking approach — taking on side work at venues for exposure, shadowing experienced planners, attending trade shows, and building referral relationships with vendors. Her persistence paid off. By early 2025, her website traffic had increased by 200%, and referrals began flowing in from the partner network she had cultivated.
Today, just two years after launching, Amber-Lynn has already exceeded her 2026 goal by midyear. She has confidently raised her hourly rate from her startup pricing, is exploring hiring an assistant to support her growing workload, and has worked with the advisor to set a 5-year long-term goal.
